Datanet conducted a 3 phase WIFI project across the British Museum.

Datanet conducted a 3 phase WIFI project across the British Museum. This included:

Phase 1 – Locate and identify existing wireless access points across site

Phase 2 – Swap out existing wireless access points for a newer/faster model

Phase 3 – Installing cabling infrastructure of new wireless access points

Challenges that Datanet faced

  • Logistics of moving MEWPS around site and around the existing displays
  • Planning and programming in works throughout the museum along with the heads of galleries
  • Existing building infrastructure and make - up (some walls were 1m thick)
  • Heights of some of the galleries to get to the access points
  • Information was scarce on existing locations of access points

Conclusion

Datanet had 8 months to complete all 3 phases of the project, Datanet completed all works within 6 months due to the planning, co operation and hard work from Datanet and the customer. The feedback from the customer was very positive and they were impressed with the way Datanet carried out the works from planning to installation.

Locate and identify existing wireless access points across site

As the museum had no drawings or plans of existing wireless access points, Datanet used the latest in network mapping software in order to locate wireless access points across the 990,000 sq. ft site. Once found the locations were marked up on drawings ready to be swapped out as part of phase 2.

Swap out existing wireless access points for a newer/faster model

Datanet replaced a total of 245 x wireless access points using a variety of mobile elevated working platforms to access those that were at height. All works had to be completed in and out of hours as the museum remained operational to the public throughout the project. Datanet had to remain in close contact with the customer and wider museum staff in order to gain access to galleries and ensure that the museum artifacts and displays were appropriately protected. All gallery areas has to be completed out of hours between 19:00 – 06:00 and Datanet had to ensure that all machinery, tools and display protection had been removed by 06:00 for the museum to open for the general public.

Installing cabling infrastructure of new wireless access points

Datanet Installed 18 x new wireless access points including the cabling infrastructure from the local cabinet. Again gallery areas had to be completed out of hours. A challenge that Datanet faced was that all cabling had to be hidden from public view and due to the age of the building the routes posed their own set of challenges.
